Band ‘Jannabi’, the band that's walking back in time

《Quoted lyrics from Jeon Young-Rok and learned from Jo Deok-Bae's singing method. Referred to Noh Sayeon and Simon and Garfunkel when composing. They dreamed of making an album like Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds (1996)'. They turn 27 this year. The 5 friends born in 1992 seem to really like things old-fashioned. This is about 'Jannabi'. After Hyukoh, this is the biggest outbreak in the indie scene. The ballad 'For Lovers Who Hesitate' from their 2nd album 'Legend' which was released last month ranked first on music charts, even amongst idols they're still within the 10s for a month now. Their first nationwide tour was completely sold out. 》

The guitar Kim Dohyung is using is a 1964 model just like the one John Lennon used. He uses it to bring out an old sound
Choi Junghoon (vocal) who we met in a cafe in Seoul Mapo-gu took out his 'Samsung Magic Hole' on the table. It's a flip phone that came out in 2009. It's a feature phone so he can't even use Kakao Talk. Using 2G in a 5G world.

“I started using it since 2017. So I can focus more on album production.”

Jannabi seems to keep going back in time. 'Legend' was made like a masterpiece from half a century ago. Seven-membered children choir, a concert band, soprano, and the flute solo that flickers between the 1980 style melody. And they worked with a 10-membered string band from Nashville, USA remotely from Seoul.

Jannabi who debuted in 2014 were hot in the indie scene. A bunch of hardcore fans stayed up all night, 20 hours before the concert to take the front seats. Instead of looking away they put their life on line to make one masterpiece.

"We spent all the money we have saved after debut on this album. We worked on the album while staying in our studio in Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do for almost an entire year.”(Choi Junghoon)

Kim Dohyung(guitar) said “it felt like we were living with something on our chest for the whole year”. Choi Junghoon was insomniac. “I have to sleep”his torturous obsession can be seen later in the album. A dream rock medley ‘Geum Ui Hwan Hyang ‘Bad Dreams’ ‘Land of Night’. “I really admire The Beatles' psychedelic rock” it's a highlight that suits them.

Along with sleep, and dreams a topic that keep showing up in their lyrics is ‘A child who became an adult’. The five members grew up together in Bundang-gu. Beach Boys' California, The Beatles' Penny Lane to them it's Bundang's ‘Dolamro’.

“it's quite an uncool place full of apartments, shops and cram schools. A bit inappropriate for the rebellious rock star's stage that I dreamt of in middle school….”(Kim Dohyung)

They missed that time, and wrote a song called ‘DOLMARO’. ‘How did we become adults, every day is a heavy burden.’ it's the lyrics of the last track ‘Dreams, Books, Power and Walls’.

They who look up to Lee Young-hoon's music have achieved their dreams. Last year they participated in Lee Moonse's 16th album as composers.

“When writing ‘For Lovers Who Hesitate’ We listened to Noh Sayeon's ‘The Meeting and ‘Careless Love’, and Choi Jinhee's ‘Love Maze’ a lot. Our lifelong dream is to make a song with Kim Changwan.”(Yoo Younghyun·Keyboards)

Jannabi likes old stuff. That's why they refer to themselves as ‘Group Sound’. Even their success looks like clothes that don't fit them, they looked very nervous. The lyrics of ‘Together!’ ‘whose sad dream is to become a crane only if one folds a thousand of them was derived from Jeon Young-rok's 'Paper Crane'. They called Jeon Young-rok's manager personally to take permission to use it. They said it's as if they're dreaming.

“compared to musicians around our age we look like we're a little behind, but we're proud of ourselves. We just hope our youth can be looked back at passionately. whilst think 'it really is a legendary story'.

Jannabi - 슬픔이여안녕 (ASTEARSGOBY) lyrics

[Verse 1] I’ve forgotten everything now Or did I lose it all? I came searching for answers But I end up leaving questions behind It was a turning point When I get back home and lay down What kind of expression should I make Waving sorrow’s hands Might be coming or going Or standing somewhere [Chorus] Listen, young pal If you look for the things you lost where you lost them  Sometimes it shines a light that knows grief  [Verse 2] I dislike myself But I also like me who’s like that There was a time when I was repulsed by the frequently glimmering happy phrases  [Chorus] Listen, young pal If you look for the things you lost where you lost them  Sometimes it shines a light that knows grief  [Bridge] Look at me, I’m waving my hands Goodbye sadness, ooh, ooh [Refrain] Wind blows, and rain pours And flowers of a season bloomed, bye bye The clouds are white and the sky is blue I grew up at a certain time, bye bye

Jannabi's Choi Junghoon interview with Elle

  Q. I heard that your mother doesn't like your long hair which you have now become famous for. She even sent in a complaint to one of your radio appearances asking 'Why on earth do you grow it'. A. I didn't grow it because I wanted to. I didn't have time to cut it before some gig so I went on stage as is and the fans really liked it. So I kept growing it since. Q. There's the story with your mom, and looking at other stories here and there, I burst out laughing so many times. It seems like your life is a sitcom without intending it. A. I'm a bit like that. Life is like a sitcom, just like the saying "Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up but a comedy in long-shot." There are obviously things you really hate and you could get stressed but in the long run, it's all comedy. You can only laugh.         Q. Jannabi's 3rd album 'The Land of Fantasy' has finally come out. How do you usually feel after putting out an album? A. This time i...

Jannabi - 레이디버드 (LADYBIRD) lyrics

[Verse 1] A dated scenery  Ragged lovers Lukewarm raindrops The tantrums that grow on your feet With one eternal expression Shall we take a nap  Or sleep an entire verse We open the book Struggling with the flooding drowsiness  And in one same dream [Pre-Chorus] Sweet, sweet life Stop right there I will remember [Chorus] Oh I'll sing a song for every time of life I sang [Verse 2] “Make me a blissful song so I can sing it anywhere” Just then the sun illuminated her And I smiled quietly  [Pre-Chorus] Sweet, sweet life Stop right there I will remember [Chorus] I'll sing a song for every time of life I sang [Outro] Our weak selves Will be protected by love Love is fragile We need to protect that Rub your eyes and wakeup  While looking at me, as if stroking your eyebrows Outside is still the same Don’t rush our season Our season Is it beautiful or is it messy?
