5 Questions and Answers with Jannabi
Q What have you been diving into lately?
It hasn't been long since the release of the album so it's still pretty hectic but amidst that I've been busy looking for new music. There's nothing like a new stimulus to beat the burnout that comes after every album.
Q In comparison to your previous release, this album <The Land of Fantasy> is very unique. It sounds like a song you'd listen to alone on a merry-go-round at a closed theme park. Also feels like I'm watching a high quality musical. Makes me wonder what the intention behind it was.
I hoped many people would feel entertained by it and through that, I included things I wanted to say as well. Just like a storybook or a movie, I made it hoping it would make people take a breath and picture their own image while listening. It seems like music has become closer to an accessory or some scenery these days, I wanted to make an album whose true value can only be felt while listening to it with concentration and thinking about the meaning.
Q The fairytale-like lyrics that isn't easy to find these days left an impression on me. On first glance it seems like a fantasy but I can feel actual senses through the lyrics. Where do you get your inspiration from while writing lyrics?
Most of the times I get my inspiration from books, movies and other genres aside from music. For this album, I gained so much inspiration from everyday conversations. I actually put in effort to catch certain things from conversations with friends. I also get influenced by the weather and flow of time a lot. After answering I realized there's nothing really specific, I seem to take much interest in many aspects of daily life.
Q The illustrations for every track are very impressive, I think it properly portrays the mood of each song. Please tell us who worked on it and explain the album artwork including the cover.
A New York based artist, Lukas Palumbo, worked on it. I thought it would be nice if I could show a mysterious and shabby image, like one you'd get from a fairytale book in an antique shop on a hidden alley, through this album. We visualized the descriptive image we had with each song while working on it. It helps amplify the scene created by the storyteller. We plan on adding more interesting points by the time we release the LP.
Q What does music mean to Jannabi?
The one thing that doesn't stop. Even after releasing an album I immediately want to start working on another project and I want to find new music to listen to and stuff. Big big thanks to the fans who make it possible for us to love music this much.
